Man Arrested For Paying With $2 Bills

A man trying to pay a fee using $2 bills was arrested, handcuffed and taken to jail after clerks at a Best Buy store questioned the currency’s legitimacy and called police.

According to an account in the Baltimore Sun, 57-year-old Mike Bolesta was shocked to find himself taken to the Baltimore County lockup in Cockeysville, Md., where he was handcuffed to a pole for three hours while the U.S. Secret Service was called to weigh in on the case.

Bolesta told the Sun: “I am 6 feet 5 inches tall, and I felt like 8 inches high. To be handcuffed, to have all those people looking on, to be cuffed to a pole – and to know you haven’t done anything wrong. And me, with a brother, Joe, who spent 33 years on the city police force. It was humiliating.”

After Best Buy personnel reportedly told Bolesta he would not be charged for the installation of a stereo in his son’s car, he received a call from the store saying it was in fact charging him the fee. As a means of protest, Bolesta decided to pay the $114 bill using 57 crisp, new $2 bills.

As the owner of Capital City Student Tours, the Baltimore resident has a hearty supply of the uncommon currency. He often gives the bills to students who take his tours for meal money.

“The kids don’t see that many $2 bills, so they think this is the greatest thing in the world,” Bolesta says. “They don’t want to spend ‘em. They want to save ‘em. I’ve been doing this since I started the company. So I’m thinking, ‘I’ll stage my little comic protest. I’ll pay the $114 with $2 bills.’”

Bolesta explained what happened when he presented the bills to the cashier at Best Buy Feb. 20.

“She looked at the $2 bills and told me, ‘I don’t have to take these if I don’t want to.’ I said, ‘If you don’t, I’m leaving. I’ve tried to pay my bill twice. You don’t want these bills, you can sue me.’ So she took the money – like she’s doing me a favor.”

Bolesta says the cashier marked each bill with a pen. Other store employees began to gather, a few of them asking, “Are these real?”

“Of course they are,” Bolesta said. “They’re legal tender.”

According to the Sun report, the police arrest report noted one employee noticed some smearing of ink on the bills. That’s when the cops were called. One officer reportedly noticed the bills ran in sequential order.

Said Bolesta: “I told them, ‘I’m a tour operator. I’ve got thousands of these bills. I get them from my bank. You got a problem, call the bank.’ I’m sitting there in a chair. The store’s full of people watching this. All of a sudden, he’s standing me up and handcuffing me behind my back, telling me, ‘We have to do this until we get it straightened out.’

“Meanwhile, everybody’s looking at me. I’ve lived here 18 years. I’m hoping my kids don’t walk in and see this. And I’m saying, ‘I can’t believe you’re doing this. I’m paying with legal American money.’”

Bolesta was taken to the lockup, where he sat handcuffed to a pole and in leg irons while the Secret Service was called.

“At this point,” he says, “I’m a mass murderer.”

Secret Service agent Leigh Turner eventually arrived and declared the bills legitimate, adding, according to the police report, “Sometimes ink on money can smear.”

Commenting on the incident, Baltimore County police spokesman Bill Toohey told the Sun: “It’s a sign that we’re all a little nervous in the post-9/11 world.”

Dave Ramsey The Financial Charlatan

Dave Ramsey is famous for telling people to get out of debt. Sound advice for most people. Although telling people it's a good idea to get out of debt, selling books and putting on seminars doesn't mean you know anything about economics on any level.

For example, the way anyone gets out of debt from an individual to a country is to spend less than you take in and depending on your time frame you will definitely get out of debt. That's it, that is Ramseys entire claim to fame that he repeatedly tells people this, because sadly most people are to dumb to figure it out on their own.

Now ironically enough this is quite similar to how to lose weight, you burn more calories than you consume. The theory is super easy, in practice it's more challenging. Now because I put that reality in words does that make me an expert dietician or doctor? No it means I understand the very basic premise of losing weight. Now I could be like Dave Ramsey and market myself as an expert on the subject of weight loss, giving people medical advice etc etc, but I won't do that, because even though I understand how to lose weight I am not going to market myself as a revolutionary who came up with a super easy concept so that I can make millions selling things to people who clearly have trouble saving money.

I listened to Ramsey probably 8 or so years ago, I was much younger and had yet to form my own opinions on the subject of economics. I vividly remember him downing gold at every opportunity saying that it was a horrible "investment", and that real estate and mutual funds were the way to go to make money. Now this was around 2003 or 2004, on the cusp of the bubble in real estate was well as the stock market. Gold was around 300 dollars per ounce.

So let's fast forward 8 years. Housing hasn't made gains in 8 years and is continuing to slide, the stock market has gone sideways for a decade now, while Gold is up from 300 per ounce to 1500. That is a %500 increase in 10 years.

Now Dave is right, gold is not an investment, people get this wrong. Gold is money. and during a time when the Federal Reserve is printing 10's of trillions of paper dollars it is the time to be in commodities, anything really that is produced at a slower rate than paper currency will go up vs that currency, it is supply and demand.

Dave's philosophy is that "cash is king" guess what cash may have been king when it was backed by gold until 1971, but since then it has been in steady freefall. It has lost over 95% of it's purchasing power in 100 years while gold has maintained it's purchasing power for thousands. So let's show you why Dave is wrong on gold.

Dave recommends mutual funds which have made no progress in a decade, which is bad enough, doubly so when you consider Gold has made double digit gains every single year in the last decade. You may say "well the DJIA has gone from 8,000 to 12,000 in only 3 years" but priced in what? Worthless paper dollars, using this metric Zimbabwe in the height of it's hyper inflation had the best nominally performing stock market in the history of the world, but the people were plunged into poverty. So price the Dow in terms of Gold

As you can see the market continues to plunge in terms of real purchasing power even since 08. The Dow has gone from a high of almost 44:1 with gold to now just 8:1. It's pathetic. What's more pathetic is that 100 years ago the ratio was 5:1 so in 100 years it has gone up 62.5% barely half a percent per year. Simply abysmal.

So the stock market in terms of real money has only gone up at an average rate of .6% per year for 100 years, what about housing, the other investment recommendation of Ramsey. Consider a house that would've sold for $50,000 10 years ago when gold was $250, it would've taken 200 ounces to buy the house. Fast forward 10 years and today the house would probably be $100,000 (at the peak it would've been 200k) but today take the same 200 ounces of gold and you can afford a house that is $280,000 dollars. So Gold has handily beat the price of homes which despite Ramseys claims do not whatsoever keep pace with inflation. Had you heeded sound advice 10 years ago you would've gone from living in a 50,000 dollar house to a nearly 300,000 house and not had to work a minute extra.

But sadly people continue to listen to Dave Ramsey even though he clearly knows nothing about investing or economics which in an of itself doesn't bother me, but he shouldn't act like he is an authority on the subject because his advice is on par with Jim "buy bear stearns" Cramer.

I was listening to a podcast, somewhat of a newstalk/comdey show when the host was talking about a recent trip to South America. She was describing a scene where the group was on a jungle hike and saw some pregnant tribal woman with 6 or 7 kids and 5 pigs trying to cross a river that was 2-3 feet deep.

The host said the woman led the children across one by one, ranging in age for 8-mere months old, once the kids were across she took the pigs upstream and threw them one by one into the river where they would swim/float down until the oldest kid would grab the string around the pigs neck and pull it to shore.

After she described this story the host was just clearly amazed by this woman, how tough she was, how much ingenuity she possessed how clever to have been able to accomplish this feat on her own.

Really?

You're amazed by this?

This womans people have probably been crossing this damn river in the same manner for thousands of years, do any of them build a bridge? Even some makeshift crossing? Apparently not. In hundreds if not thousands of years these people much like the blacks in Africa are literally no more advanced than they were at the dawn of time.

Certainly these non Whites lack the capacity to learn, invent and build. I'm not downing them for it, that is how they are made but for a host to be awe struck by what amounts to raw stupidity is ignorant on the hosts part.

Here she lives in a society where in the palm of her hand she can hold a computer so amazing that she can video chat with someone in the far corners of the earth in real time, she can get in a car and drive 700 miles in a single day, or jump in an airplane and fly literally to any location in the world in 24 hours, hell if she had the money she could hitch a ride to outer freaking space. Is she amazed by that? Is she just constantly thankful and PROUD that her race has made it possible to live both in the coldest and hottest climate on earth with equal comfort?

Apparently not, and why?

Because people don't think, if they even try they so often miss the forest for the trees.

Wow! I can’t believe she left out sexual orientation. You can bet in five years she’ll be mentioning it along with race every time she “celebrates Diversity”, just as Sarah Palin will also be doing.

Diversity in colonial America? “Sure! Some folks bought and sold other folks, while some folks were bought and sold by other folks. So they were all the same! What glorious diversity!”

She’s a genius, folks.

Pro-Israel critics of the media, and particularly of CNN, should check out "The Glenn Beck Program" to give their high blood pressure a respite.

Beck, 42 and host of what is considered the fastest-growing TV show in cable news, can make Bibi Netanyahu look like a dove. The baby-faced former Top 40 radio disc jockey has been known to describe Saudi Arabian leaders as "nut jobs" and "dirt bags" and says that if America doesn't support and protect Israel, "we will lose our only strategic ally in the Mideast and we will lose our souls."

Yes, Beck, an admitted former alcoholic and drug addict, is now a devout Christian who believes in an Armageddon in which millions will die. He also believes in God's love for Israel, and he is not shy about discussing his own support for the Jewish state on his hour-long show that airs nightly at 7 p.m. on CNN Headline News, perhaps positioned to counter the success of Fox's right-wing programming.

Beck, whose manner is pleasant and friendly, bordering on gee-whiz, also hosts a daily radio talk show heard on more than 230 stations and is a regular contributor on "Good Morning America."

"It's a horrible thing to admit, but prior to 9/11 my view of the Mideast was basically, ‘will this fighting never stop, and just solve it yourselves'," he explained during a recent interview.

The World Trade Center tragedy forced him to think about why "so much hatred was generated toward the U.S., and I started to do my homework." He said he did a great deal of reading (including the Bible and the Koran) and talking to people, focusing on why the U.S. "sends so much money to the Mideast for oil" and trying to discern who are America's real friends in the region.

He concluded that Israel is "our only real hope for sanity" in the Mideast, and "my gut tells me that Israel is one of the world's great hopes."

Beck visited Israel several years ago and said he had two powerful moments there that reinforced his positive feelings toward the Jewish state. One was when he visited a bomb shelter where gas masks and injection kits were being distributed in case of attack. He said that when he noticed that the signs were in Hebrew, English and Arabic, he wondered why, if Israelis really hated the Arabs, they would "hand out medicine to save Arab lives.

"That experience really opened my eyes and showed me that Israel is the closest to America" in shared values, he said.

The second experience was walking from the Jewish section of Jerusalem to the Palestinian side and feeling that, within a few steps, he had gone "from clean to dirty and dark and dank."

Beck said he realized that the Jews shared a belief that "we can make it," whatever the circumstances, while the Arabs have leaders who tell their people "you've been conquered and you'll never make it.

"It's all about control and power and politics," he said.

Beck's outspoken support for Israel, beginning on his nationally syndicated radio show in 2002, brought death threats almost immediately, he recalled, and he was given extra protection.

He calls himself "a realist," though, and not "a blind supporter of Israel," asserting that the leadership of Israel has made "horrible mistakes, but who hasn't? Every country has its bloody noses."

Critics, particularly on the left, have accused Beck of using "hateful rhetoric," and he apologized for questioning the patriotism of Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota), the first Muslim to be elected to Congress. "That might come from my lack of intelligence," Beck said, saying his remark to Ellison was "quite possibly the poorest-worded question of all time."

Of late, Beck has talked a great deal about what he calls the "perfect storm," a combination of terrorism, Islamic militancy, hatred of the West and oil that could spell doom for the free world.

"I believe we are headed for dark times," he says. "I truly believe that we are living in 1938 and the trains are loaded." The only way to prevent disaster, he says, is for liberals and conservatives to come together and look for ways to work together to defeat our common enemy.

Beck thinks the media spin on the Mideast situation is "horribly out of whack" and biased against Israel. The only solution, which he says applies to the U.S. as well as Israel, is to "to do the right thing, be good and just continue to beat your head against the wall until the truth prevails."

So the question is what would President Palin do about illegal immigration. While Oreilly leads her in the direction she agrees to send troops to secure the border.

Now she claims that she would have every mexican here illegally report in and send in a form. Now would you deport these ILLEGAL immigrants who have already broken the law to come here? Not in President Palin's world, you issue these immigrants greencards and send them on their merry way like this guy.
