TAMPA, Fla.—Rand Paul risks alienating his father’s base as he tries to expand his own.
The Kentucky senator, who speaks at the Republican convention Wednesday night, has a younger face and a softer edge, but his name does not guarantee the loyalty of Ron Paul’s most passionate supporters.
With buzz around a potential run for president in 2016, Ron Paul’s son plans to make the case to delegates that it is better for the movement to work with the GOP establishment rather than from the rebellious fringe. But convincing a libertarian movement that puts a premium on purity to play in the big tent of a major party is a big ask.
Among some supporters of the elder Paul, there are doubts about whether Rand Paul is up to the task of carrying his father’s torch.
Many Ron Paul supporters are still upset that Rand endorsed Romney in June during a Fox News appearance while his father was still technically a candidate. In fact, Ron Paul is being denied a speaking slot this week because he refuses to endorse or release his delegates to Romney. During the primaries, Rand always said he planned to support whoever won the Republican nomination whenever asked if his father would consider a third-party candidacy.
That doesn’t go over well with some of Ron Paul’s most fervent supporters.
“I was kind of on thin ice with Rand, and then he went and endorsed Romney. And I said, ‘Dude, that’s it! We’re done now,’” said Nick Tanzillo, 27, who flew here from Boston for a Paul rally on Sunday. “He didn’t need to do it when he did. It really cracked the liberty movement. You’ve got the hardcore Ron supporters saying, ‘What are you doing to us?’”
“It looks like he’s pandering to the party,” added 30-year-old Marshall Soell from San Antonio.”
Ron Paul, 77, is retiring after 24 years in the House. Rand Paul, 49, did something his father never had in 2010 when he won statewide office after upsetting a GOP establishment favorite in the Republican primary. He’s begun raising his national profile, delivered the official Republican Saturday radio address this weekend, has become increasingly close with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and now plans to deliver a primetime address at the national convention. Ron Paul is leaving Tampa Tuesday night, so he will not be at the convention site to watch his son speak.
In separate interviews with POLITICO, both father and son played down their divergent tactics at the convention here.
Asked whether his son can carry his torch, the elder Paul said: “Time will tell. Nobody has a torch that they give to somebody else. I don’t have a torch. Everybody has to own their own way. He’ll do well.”
Rand Paul pushed back at suggestions that he may be alienating some of his father’s supporters. And he argued that the GOP platform is a “very libertarian, conservative document.”
“One out of 1,000 will be unhappy,” Rand Paul said of his father’s supporters. “But the vast majority come up to me and are complimentary and are very supportive.”

Rand Paul Has Crossed Lines You Do Not Come Back From
By now I'm sure everyone has heard that Rand Paul has officially endorsed Romney for President. This seemed to come as a great surprise to many people, who have expressed outrage on his facebook page.
Sadly it didn't come as a surprise to me someone who has called out Rand Paul for several years now in posts such as "Rand Paul IS A Zionist Neo Con", Neo Con Rand Paul Takes The Bailout Money Rand Paul Officially Kisses The Neo Con Ring". I was fully on board with Rand at the beginning, donating to his campaign and giving him all of the press that I could here. So I wanted to like Rand, but looking at the whole picture I just haven't been able to for some time. Summing it up in March of 2011 "In my opinion Rand hasn't really been put through the test, for example opposing a Republican leader, even a popular republican leader like his father has. Time will tell and I hope Rand will stand by the Constitution."
Now in 2012 after this endorsement
I now not only consider Rand to be an opportunist riding his fathers coattails into office, but an enemy of freedom, the Constitution and the American people.
Rand with this interview has made it known who he ultimately sides with in the battle, he has left the millions of people who have worked tirelessly to spread the message of freedom and put his father into office and jumped on board the freight train which is the establishment. The establishment which claims to own you, who steals your money and forces you to bend to its will and will kill you if you sufficiently resist.
This is no small matter, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are polar opposites, in this interview with one of the biggest neo con cheerleaders on the planet, Rand tries to draw comparisons of Ron and Mitt about family size which is an absurd thing to tell people your alliance is based on. The fact is that Ron and Mitt are so far apart on the political spectrum that Rand is forced to draw non political similarities because political ones don't exist. Mitt Romney is a liar or the kinder, gentler, seemingly more palatable term "flip flopper". He is for foreign wars, sanctions, taxation, abortion, government mandated "healthcare", social security, fiat money, central banking, medicare medicaid and every other government program you could imagine, Ron Paul is for none of these things.
So Sir Rand The Spineless, just stays on the GOP bandwagon and says "well even though millions of people support my Dad because they want to be free and have donated tens of millions of dollars and countless hours, possibly lost friendships or jobs over debates, I will do what is best for me myself and I and go along to get along"
Many people outside of the RP movement don't seem to understand why people support him. After this interview I'm wondering if Rand even understands. It isn't that his Dad just says things we agree with, he has a solid 30 year track record of backing them up and that is the key. Ron Paul has been the single "No" vote in a Congress of 535 more times than everyone else combined, meanwhile most people can't stand up in a group of 10 at a dinner party for what they believe in. Imagine the courage it took for Ron to stand by the Constitution and dutifully carry out the orders passed down by our Founders, when all of his colleagues went the other way, when the newspapers, radio stations and TV shows either ignored him or mocked him.
Imagine what Ron Paul could've done for Ron Paul if he had played ball for 30 years, surely he would've been Speaker of the House at least, made hundreds of millions like the other corrupt congressman and could've bought and island in the Caribbean for his family to live on when the inevitable S will hit the F. But he didn't do that, he left behind untold power and money, fame and prestige for you, for me, and for this country. That is why I support him, because he has character, he kept his head down, did what was right and just let the chips fall where they may. I am very happy for him that he has been vindicated in his lifetime, that he has seen the fruits of his decades of labor. We cannot be discouraged by Rand, the handwriting has been on the wall there for several years now.
We must move on, forget Rand and understand that just because your legal last name is Paul it doesn't make you great. Just because you say good things, it is the doing that counts.
We must continue to do what we have all been doing, speaking up, donating to good causes our money and our time, researching for ourselves and becoming informed. This endorsement doesn't change anything, in fact I would rather get Rand out of peoples minds at this stage than have him in the White House in 2016 and then find out this apple fell way to far from the tree.

The Trouble With Rand Paul

Rand Paul just endorsed a man who is deeply hostile to human liberty.
Perhaps that’s Rand’s idea of playing politics? Come to the table, strike a deal, get what you can. Trouble is, it’s tough striking a good deal when the guy on the other side of the table believes that the government should be allowed to claim — without having to produce any evidence whatsoever — that certain people are terrorists, and therefore should be detained indefinitely without any kind of due process.
That’s textbook tyranny.
Rand Paul might have done some good work trying to filibuster the Patriot Act, but endorsing Mitt Romney goes beyond the pale. The NDAA is Romney’s most egregious transgression against liberty, but not far behind are his desire to start a war against Iran, to increase military spending, to start a trade war with China and his belief that corporations are people.
I know I will never agree with any politician on every single dimension of every single issue, and that to some extent politics will always involve compromise. Certainly, I disagree with Ron Paul on some issues. But Mitt Romney’s stances on these issues seem much, much, much closer to Barack Obama than they do to Ron Paul. In fact, he might as well have endorsed Obama for President.
And the Ron Paul supporters are noticing: Rand has probably burnt most bridges to his Father’s supporters now. His Facebook page has seen a huge outpouring of fury:
I have always been uncomfortable with the children of politicians becoming politicians. Every anointed child feels like a step away from meritocracy. Dynasties are dangerous, because the dynasty itself comes to be more important than the qualities of the politicians. Who would Rand Paul be if he wasn’t Ron Paul’s son? Just another neocon. Neocons often have a few “unfashionable” libertarian or constitutionalist sympathies; look at Charles Krauthammer. But — unlike Ron Paul — the neocon never has the spine to do much about their libertarian or constitutionalist sympathies. They just ride on the establishment steamroller, into foreign occupations, empire building, corporate welfare, and banking bailouts. Into Iraq, and soon into Iran.

Yes, I would have [signed the NDAA]. And I do believe that it is appropriate to have in our nation the capacity to detain people who are threats to this country, who are members of al Qaeda. Look, you have every right in this country to protest and to express your views on a wide range of issues but you don’t have a right to join a group that has killed Americans, and has declared war against America. That’s treason. In this country we have a right to take those people and put them in jail. If I were president I would not abuse this power. But people who join al Qaeda are not entitled to rights of due process under our normal legal code. They are entitled instead to be treated as enemy combatants.Except, if the government had any evidence they were really members of al-Qaeda and engaged in a war against America they could be charged with offenses under current laws and tried in front of a jury of their peers. As was proven when Judge Katherine Forrest struck down the indefinite detention provision of the NDAA as unconstitutional, the real detention targets are people like the ones who brought the case — writers, investigative journalist and whistleblowers: people like Chris Hedges, Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg, Jennifer Bolen, and Birgitta Jonsdottir.

That’s why this country is doomed! Even the person you trust is a sell-out. I’m done with politics, people deserve what they get. Let the country run itself to the ground, and still people will not understand what freedom and self-responsibility is about. People want big gov’t, big brother every step of the way. Well, they got it. The rest of us, might as well try to move to another country or find an island and move there.
I knew I’d never vote for Mitt… Now I know I’ll never vote for Rand.

Rand Paul Basically Endorses Mitt Romney On Fox News
I have criticized Rand Paul for 2 years now, (here, here, here and here) and while I have slightly softened in the meantime I am still convinced fully that at best Rand is no Ron. At best he plays ball with hopes of changing the establishment from within (foolish) and at worst he is just an opportunist riding his fathers coattails into a powerful position.
I can't say that it came as a complete shock when I heard he had sung Mitt Romneys praises on Fox News, but it was maddening nonetheless.

Rand Paul Returns $500,000 In Office Budget To Treasury

Freshman Sen. Rand Paul is making good on his promise to cut federal spending. The Kentucky Republican and tea-party favorite said Thursday he’s returning $500,000 to the U.S. Treasury — money from his operating budget that his office never spent.
The half million dollars represents about 16 percent of Paul’s annual budget. He contended no senator had returned as much to taxpayers, though at least two senators disputed that claim. An aide to Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) said his office returned $636,036 in unspent money to the Treasury in Fiscal Year 2010 and another $503,161 in 2011.
“I ran to stop the reckless spending. And I ran to end the damaging process of elected officials acting as errand boys, competing to see who could bring back the biggest check and the most amount of pork,” Paul said at a news conference in Louisville, where he presented taxpayers with a massive mock check for $500,000.
“I hope this sets an example for the rest of government — at all levels,” he added. “We can carry out our duties in a fiscally responsible way. Government can be both smart and efficient. We are proving that — and trying to convince the rest of Washington.”
Paul is the son of GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul and co-founded the Senate tea party caucus. As the younger Paul stumped for his father in Iowa and New Hampshire, there’s been plenty of speculation that Rand Paul could launch a presidential bid of his own in 2016.
